Bagging the Plastic
Mistaking a bobbing plastic grocery bag for a dinner of jelly-fish is a main cause of death among sea-turtles near the Osa Peninsula, and being remote rural Costa Rica, there’s not much chance of somebody charging to the rescue by installing any costly recycling programs or trawling the bags out of the water, so the only solution left was to do something to keep those bags from getting to the turtles, and that’s when somebody realized that the hazard of plastics, their near-infinite durability, was also their greatest resource value …
by cutting these plastic bags (which are usually made of different types of colors and patterns) into long strips, they become so easy to manipulate that they can actually be knit into newer, more attractive handbags and purses. We love this project: it creates something of value out of used plastic grocery bags, saves sea turtles, cleans up the environment and creates micro business opportunities for women who otherwise would be unemployed…

The Sea Turtle Conservation Program of the South Caribbean of Costa Rica is pleased to announce that will join WIDECAST Costa Rica in August 2007. After many great years working along Asociation ANAI, we will leave our friends at ANAI, and become part of the WIDECAST network. WIDECAST is a non-profit organization that supports local sea turtle conservation initiatives in most states and countries of the Caribbean region promoting cooperation between all nations. For over two decades WIDECAST has counted with the support from National Coordinators in more than 30 nations and territories in the Caribbean, and worked close with key stakeholders at a governmental and non-governmental level (including scientists, conservationists, resource managers, educators, etc.), to promote regional capacity and assist with the design and implementation of scientifically sound sea turtle management programs at local, national and regional (international) levels.
Our program will continue to support the sea turtle projects at Gandoca, Playa Negra/Cahuita, Tuba Creek, Peninsula de Osa and Ostional beaches.
Welcome every body, i really wanto to know about your experience, see your pictures and your videos!
